How the age calculator works

Your age is the gap between your date of birth and a second date, which is today unless you pick another. The tool first counts complete years, then complete months after that, and finally the remaining days. The totals in months, weeks, days and hours are worked out from the exact number of calendar days between the two dates, so leap years are handled correctly.

Next birthday countdown

The countdown shows how many days are left until the next time your birth date comes round, the weekday it falls on and the age you will turn. If today is your birthday, it says so. People born on 29 February are counted on 28 February in years that are not leap years.

When you need your exact age

  • Admission and job forms. Many upper age limits, such as for government jobs, are checked on a closing date. Set "Age on" to that date.
  • Passports and ID cards. Use the Gregorian date printed on your documents, not the Hijri date.
  • Fun facts. Share your age in days, or the image card, with friends on WhatsApp or Instagram.

Hours are shown as days Γ— 24 and do not include the time of day you were born. For official purposes always rely on the date printed on your documents.

Frequently asked questions

How is my exact age worked out?

The calculator counts whole years from your date of birth, then whole months, then the leftover days, exactly like counting on a calendar. If a month is shorter than your birth day (for example you were born on the 31st), the last day of that month is used.

When is the birthday of someone born on 29 February?

In a normal year this tool counts 28 February as the birthday. In a leap year it uses 29 February. Some people prefer 1 March, which is legally used in a few countries, so you may celebrate whichever you like.

Can I find my age on a past or future date?

Yes. Change the 'Age on' date to any day, for example the closing date of a job, admission form or exam, and the age is calculated for that exact day.

Does this use the Hijri or the Gregorian calendar?

It uses the Gregorian (English) calendar, which is what passports, ID cards and most forms use. For Islamic dates, see our Hijri date converter.
