How these prayer times are calculated
Prayer times depend on where the sun is. Fajr starts at dawn when the sun is a set number of degrees below the horizon, Sunrise ends Fajr, Dhuhr begins just after the sun passes its highest point, Asr depends on shadow length, Maghrib is sunset and Isha begins when twilight ends.
This tool uses the open-source Adhan library with your chosen city's latitude and longitude and a calculation method that is usual for that region, which you can change. Pick a city from the list or use your location. Everything runs on your device and works offline.
Good to know
- Sunrise is not a prayer time. It marks the end of the Fajr window, so do not pray after it.
- The Hanafi Asr time is later than the Shafi one, usually by about an hour in winter and 40 minutes in summer.
- Mosque timetables may differ by a few minutes because of local precaution margins.
- Find the direction to pray with the Qibla finder.
Frequently asked questions
Which calculation method should I choose?
The tool picks the method that is usual for the city you choose: Umm al-Qura in Saudi Arabia, ISNA in North America, Egyptian in Egypt, the University of Islamic Sciences Karachi method in Pakistan, India and Bangladesh, and the Muslim World League in most of Europe. You can change it any time. Methods use different twilight angles, so Fajr and Isha can move by several minutes.
What is the difference between Hanafi and Shafi Asr?
Hanafi Asr starts when an object's shadow is twice its length (plus its noon shadow), so it begins later. Shafi, Maliki and Hanbali Asr starts when the shadow equals its length. Hanafi is common in South Asia, Turkey and Central Asia; the other schools are common in the Arab world, Africa and Southeast Asia. Choose the one you follow.
Why do my times differ from my mosque?
Mosques often add a few minutes of caution to the start times and set their own jamaat times. These are calculated start times for the exact city centre, so a nearby town can differ by a minute or two.
Which time zone are the times shown in?
By default the local time of the city you choose, so London shows UK time and Dubai shows Gulf time. You can switch to your device's time if you are travelling.
Does it work offline?
Yes. All calculation happens on your phone, so once the page has loaded it needs no internet.
