10 Ways to Lower Your Electricity Bill

Updated Β· 5 min read

Your bill is units times price, so the fastest saving is using fewer units, especially in the months when slabs push the price up.

Where the units go

Cooling and heating are usually the biggest part of a household bill, followed by the water heater, fridge, iron and washing machine. Lights and phone chargers are small by comparison.

Ten steps

  1. Set the AC higher. Every degree warmer saves a noticeable share of its power. Pair it with a fan.
  2. Clean filters on the AC and fridge coils. Dirty ones make the machine work harder.
  3. Switch to LED bulbs. They use a fraction of the power of old bulbs.
  4. Use an inverter AC or fan when you next replace one.
  5. Turn off at the switch. Standby power on TVs and chargers adds up.
  6. Iron in one batch, and wash full loads.
  7. Do not open the fridge door often, and keep it away from the wall and the stove.
  8. Use a timer for the water heater or heat water only when needed.
  9. Block sun with curtains in the afternoon, and seal door gaps.
  10. Watch your slab. If you are just above a limit, cutting a few units can lower the price of all of them.

Measure it

Put your appliances in the electricity bill calculator to see which one costs most, then track the result in the bill tracker over a few months.
