How the conversion works

Volumes are turned into millilitres and weights into grams. To cross between them, the tool uses the typical weight of one US cup of your ingredient (for example 125 g of flour). All the other units follow from that.

Baking tips

  • Spoon flour into the cup and level it off. Scooping straight from the bag packs it and adds weight.
  • Butter sticks are marked on the wrapper, and one US stick is about 113 g (half a cup).
  • Need to scale the whole recipe? Use the recipe scaler. For other conversions such as litres to gallons, see the unit converter.

Frequently asked questions

How many grams are in a cup of flour?

About 125 g for a US cup of plain flour. A cup of sugar is about 200 g and a cup of butter is about 227 g, because every ingredient has a different density.

Why can't I convert cups to grams with one number?

A cup measures volume and a gram measures weight. How much a cup weighs depends on how heavy and how tightly packed the ingredient is, so you need the ingredient.

How big is a cup, a tablespoon and a teaspoon?

A US cup is 236.6 ml, a tablespoon is 14.79 ml and a teaspoon is 4.93 ml. A metric cup used in Australia, New Zealand and the UK is 250 ml. This tool lists both cups.

Are the gram values exact?

No, they are good kitchen averages. How you scoop flour (spooned or packed) changes the weight by 10–20%. For baking, a kitchen scale is the most reliable.

How is this different from the unit converter?

The unit converter changes between units of the same kind, such as litres to gallons. This one crosses between volume and weight using the density of the ingredient.
