How the split is worked out

The tip is bill × tip % and the tax is bill × tax %. The total is the bill plus tax plus tip, and each share is the total divided by the number of people. Turn on rounding to make every share a whole amount.

Tips for splitting a bill

  • Check whether a service charge is already on the bill before you add a tip.
  • Use the percentage calculator for any other percentage question, or the discount calculator if you have a voucher.
  • Going out as a big group? Use the team splitter to organise who sits where, then split the bill here.

Frequently asked questions

How do I split a bill with a tip?

Work out the tip on the bill, add it to the bill, then divide by the number of people. For a 120 bill with a 10% tip shared by 4 people the total is 132, so each person pays 33.

Should the tip be worked out before or after tax?

Many people tip on the bill before tax, and that is what this calculator does. Some places and countries expect a tip on the total with tax, so enter a slightly higher tip percentage if you prefer that.

How much should I tip?

It depends on the country. 10% is common in many places, 15–20% is usual in the United States, and some countries add a service charge so no tip is expected. Check the bill first.

What does rounding up each share do?

It raises each person's share to the next whole amount, so everyone can pay in simple notes or coins. The extra goes to the tip, and the calculator shows how much extra that is.

Can I split unevenly?

This tool splits equally. If someone ordered much more, subtract their items from the bill first, work out their share separately, then split the rest.
