How the trip total is built
The planner adds four parts: fuel (distance ÷ km per litre × price), tolls, food (per person per day × days × people) and the hotel (cost per night × nights). The total is then divided by the number of travellers.
Plan it well
- Work out fuel alone with the fuel cost calculator, which also takes miles and mpg.
- Agree who pays what before you leave, then settle up with the bill splitter.

Frequently asked questions
What does a road trip budget include?
Fuel, tolls and parking, food, accommodation and a little extra for surprises. This planner covers fuel, tolls, food and the hotel, which are the biggest costs.
How are hotel nights counted?
The number of nights is the number of days minus one. A 3-day trip has 2 nights. Enter the cost of the room or rooms per night for the whole group.
How is the fuel cost worked out?
Distance divided by your fuel economy in km per litre, times the price per litre. Tick the return trip box to double the distance.
Should I add a safety margin?
Yes. Many travellers add 10–15% for traffic, detours, parking and small purchases along the way.
