How the maths works
Pace is time per distance and speed is distance per time, so one is the inverse of the other. The tool changes everything to minutes per kilometre first, then shows pace and speed in both kilometres and miles, plus the time to finish common race distances.
Training tips
- Run most of your training slowly enough to chat. Use the heart rate zones calculator to check your effort.
- Race pace is easier to hold if you start a little slower than your target.
- Planning a drive instead? Work out fuel with the fuel cost calculator.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert pace to speed?
Divide 60 by the pace in minutes per kilometre. A pace of 5:00 per km is 60 ÷ 5 = 12 km/h. For minutes per mile the speed in mph is 60 ÷ the pace.
What is a good 5K time?
Beginners often run 5K in 30–40 minutes. Regular runners finish in 25 minutes or less. A pace of 6:00 per km gives a 5K in 30 minutes.
How long is a half marathon and a marathon?
A half marathon is 21.0975 km (13.1 miles) and a marathon is 42.195 km (26.2 miles).
How do I enter the pace?
Use minutes and seconds like 5:30 for 5 minutes 30 seconds per km or mile. For times, use h:mm:ss, such as 1:45:00, or mm:ss like 24:30.
Can I use it for driving or cycling?
Yes. Pick 'Speed' and enter km/h or mph to get the time for any distance, which is handy for planning a journey.
