How the split works
Every name goes into a shuffled list. The tool then deals them into teams in turn, so the sizes are as equal as possible. Choose between a fixed number of teams or a fixed team size. Press Split teams again for a new random arrangement.
Good for
- Classroom groups, sports and five-a-side games, work projects and party games.
- Need just one winner instead? Use the random name picker or the spin the wheel.
- Dinner afterwards? Split the bill with the bill splitter.
Frequently asked questions
How are the teams made?
The names are shuffled with your browser's secure random generator and dealt out one by one, like cards, so team sizes never differ by more than one person.
What if the names do not divide evenly?
Some teams get one extra person. With 10 names in 3 teams you get teams of 4, 3 and 3.
Can I choose people per team instead of the number of teams?
Yes. Pick 'People per team' and enter the size. The tool works out how many teams are needed, and the last teams may be a person short.
Can I keep two people apart or together?
Not in this tool. For that, shuffle again until you are happy, or split by hand after the first draw.
Are my names saved?
No. They stay on your device and disappear when you close or reload the page.
