How to use it
Paste your text and choose one algorithm or all four. The hashes appear as soon as you type. Switch on uppercase if the system you compare with writes hex in capitals.
Which hash should I pick?
SHA-256 is the usual choice for checksums and integrity checks. SHA-512 gives a longer hash. SHA-1 is still found in older systems and Git, but it should not be used where security matters because collisions have been shown.

Frequently asked questions
What is a hash?
A hash is a fixed-length fingerprint of some data. The same text always gives the same hash, and even a one-letter change gives a completely different one. You cannot turn a hash back into the text.
Why is MD5 not offered?
MD5 is broken for security use and your browser's crypto functions do not include it. Use SHA-256 or SHA-512 instead.
Can I use a plain hash to store passwords?
No. Fast hashes like SHA-256 can be guessed at billions of tries a second. Passwords need a slow, salted method such as bcrypt, scrypt or Argon2, done on a server.
Does it hash the exact text?
Yes. Spaces, tabs and line breaks all count, so adding a trailing space gives a different hash. Text is encoded as UTF-8 first.
Can I hash a file?
This tool hashes text only. For a file, use a command such as sha256sum on your computer.
