How this typing speed test works

Choose 30 or 60 seconds, click the box and start typing the passage. The timer starts with your first key. Correct letters turn green, mistakes turn red, and a yellow marker shows where you are. When time is up you get your net WPM (words per minute), accuracy and number of mistakes. Pasting is switched off, so the score is honest.

How the score is worked out

  • WPM: correct characters divided by 5, divided by minutes. Every 5 characters count as one word.
  • Accuracy: correct characters out of everything you typed at the end.
  • Mistakes: characters that do not match. Press Backspace to fix them, as in real work.

Tips to type faster

  • Sit straight and keep your wrists relaxed. Look at the screen, not the keys.
  • Accuracy first. A clean 40 WPM beats a messy 55 WPM because fixing mistakes costs time.
  • Practise 10 minutes every day instead of one long session. Most people gain 10 WPM in a month.
  • Learn the home row (A S D F and J K L ;) with all fingers if you are on a laptop.

Typing skills help with assignments, online jobs and data entry. Check the length of your own writing with the Word Counter or test your reflexes in the Reaction Time Test.

Frequently asked questions

How is WPM (words per minute) calculated?

The standard rule counts every 5 characters as one word, including spaces and punctuation. Your score is the number of correctly typed characters divided by 5, then divided by the minutes used. Wrong characters are not counted, so mistakes lower your speed.

How is accuracy calculated?

Accuracy is the share of typed characters that match the passage at the end of the test. If you type 300 characters and 15 are wrong, your accuracy is 95%. Fixing a mistake with Backspace removes it from the count.

What is a good typing speed?

Most people type 35 to 45 WPM. Around 50 to 60 WPM is good for study and office work, 70 or more is fast, and many data entry and typing jobs ask for 40 to 60 WPM with at least 95% accuracy.

Can I take this test on my phone?

Yes, but phone thumb typing is usually slower than a keyboard. Compare your phone score with your own earlier scores rather than with laptop typists. Autocorrect is switched off for the typing box so it cannot change your words.

Does it save my best score?

Your personal best for 30 and 60 seconds is saved only on this device in your browser. Nothing is uploaded. You can also share your result as an image for WhatsApp or Instagram.
